I firmly and strongly believe that hair extensions were made for pageant girls! Ok…that maybe taking it a bit far, but I think that hair extensions are a great alternative! They can give you those long, flowing locks or those nice full bangs. They can even give you that volume and thickness you’ve often dreamed of!
Though hair extensions are a great thing…it is EXTREMELY important that you understand how to care for them. After all getting the hair you’ve always wanted does not come at a cheap price tag. Here are a few guidelines that can help you protect and increase the longevity of your hair extensions:
How to Care for Hair Extensions
1. Treat Extensions As If They Were Your Real Hair- A good rule of thumb for hair extension care is to treat them as if they were your real hair. Always be gentle…honestly you want to be more careful with them than you are with real hair. The goal should always be to use them for as along you can and with that in mind you must give them the time and attention they need!
2. Keep Your Hair Extensions Clean: Make sure that you wash your extensions on a regular bases with quality products. They become tangled and unmanageable as dirt and sweat begin to build up. Your hair stylist can recommend how frequently you should wash them!
3. Avoid Over Heating Your Hair Extensions- This is a tough one…pageant girls love their rollers, curling irons and straightners! Girls generally tend to cut the life span of their hair extensions in half by using too much heat! To cut back on over heating the hair consider air-drying your extensions that way you can curl and straighten them a little more!
4. Be Careful With Products- Hair products is another one of those things that pageant girls love…especially hair spray! But with hair extensions
you have to be a bit more cautious. Using too much product can cause the hair to dry out which in turn causes them to become tangled and knotted. When in doubt as your hair stylist about what products you should or should not be using.
5. Avoid Sleeping In Your Hair Extensions- This will greatly depend on what type of technique was used to install your extensions. If you have clip on extensions simply remove then while sleeping. If you have extensions that were sewn in or infused be sure to tie them back or wrap them to avoid the hair becoming tangled and/or matted.
And there you have it…5 easy things to keep in mind in regards to your hair extensions
and their life span!
